Easy Chopped Cheese Sandwich for Camping – Overland Cooking with SKOTTI

Looking for a quick overland cooking recipe that’s packed with flavor? Our friend Steve made this chopped cheese sandwich on one of his overlanding trips and we’d love to share it with you! It’s hearty, satisfying, and easy to make with minimal ingredients.

⏰Cook Time: 10 minutes

🕙Prep Time: 5 minutes

🍽️ Servings: 1 serving

What you'll need:

  • 1 sub roll or sandwich bun
  • 1 frozen hamburger patty (or fresh ground beef)
  • 1/2 sliced onion
  • 1 jalapeno
  • salt, pepper and your favourite seasoning
  • Two slices of american cheese
  • ketchup & mayonnaise
  • lettuce & fresh tomato

Step 1: Fire Up Your SKOTTI

Warm up some beef tallow (or butter) on the hot SKOTTI Kast griddle. This will give your sandwich that perfect, crispy bite.

Step 2: Sizzle that patty

Place your hamburger patty (or fresh ground beef) on the griddle and let it cook for about 2 minutes per side.

Step 3: Get the veggies in

Throw in your sliced onions and jalapeños. They’ll soften up and take on that smoky, griddled goodness.

Step 4: Chop and Mix

This is where the magic happens! Use your spatula to chop up the meat and mix it with the sizzling veggies. You’re officially making a NYC chopped cheese sandwich—overlander style.

Step 5: Season and Melt

Hit everything with salt, pepper, or your go-to seasoning. Then, slap two slices of American cheese on top. Let it melt right into the beef.

Step 6: Toast the Bun

Place your roll on the griddle - crispy edges make all the difference!

Step 7: Sauce It Up

Spread ketchup and mayo onto your bun for that classic chopped cheese flavor.

Step 8: Build It Big

Pile the cheesy beef and veggies high on your toasted bun. This is a hearty camping sandwich, so don’t hold back.

Step 9: Add the Crunch

Top it off with fresh lettuce and juicy tomato slices. Balance = achieved.

Step 10: Take a Bite and Soak It In

No plates, no fuss—just you, your SKOTTI, and one insanely good sandwich. This is camping done right.
